How did SMBS begin?

Social Media Biz Summit (SMBS) was created by Renee Martinez of RubyMarCom in partnership with the Canisius College Women’s Business Center to offer business professionals information on how to develop high-level social media strategies and tactics to better navigate and expand their marketing communications activities in the digital world. The first event was held on February 16, 2012. This website was launched on December 22, 2011 and by January 28, 2012 the conference that would bring people from Chicago, New York City, Montreal, Toronto, Virginia and DC was completely sold out. Industry experts recognized internationally came to Buffalo – this was the first time the area hosted such an incredible collection of talent to benefit the greater community – but not the last. The primary vehicle of promotion for this event was Twitter. According to the Hashtracking report for the day of the event, 971 tweets went out from 162 contributors for a total of 4.3 million impressions with a reach of 610,000. That’s a lot of eyeballs!

Attendee demand for in-depth, hands-on learning was the driving force behind the creation of SMBS’s Learning Labs. We realized that while attending a conference is great for learning new concepts and networking, it will likely not provide extensive hands-on learning.

By bringing social media industry experts in to share best marketing practices, attendees will walk away with the most current tips and information that they can immediately put to use for their business.

What is the difference between SMBS and SMBS Learning Labs?

SMBS is a full day of sessions on a variety of social media-related topics presented by world-class speakers. The Learning Labs are single topics presented in about two hours by respected industry professionals with in-depth explanations and hand-on learning.

Are speakers compensated for either SMBS or Learning Labs?

SMBS: It was not in our budget to offer monetary compensation to our speakers for SMBS12, however, we are working on being able to compensate speaker for SMBS13. We did and will continue to pay for accommodations for the speakers and hope to be able to cover travel expenses for the next event. All speakers received a full access pass, entry into to the VIP party, a great gift bag packed with lots of Buffalo goodies and a variety of PR opportunities to help build their personal and professional brand.

Learning Labs: We will be paying speakers a small fee to speak as well as accommodations and travel expenses. These events too will help build their personal and professional brand.

LEARNING LABS

Learning Labs have an academic feel. The content is very comprehensive and whether you’re just learning or expanding on existing knowledge, you’ll come away with tips, tools and practical advice you can immediately put to use. We don’t provide you with surface information so you’ll still need to hire someone to get the job done (unless that’s what you want to do) – we give you the tools to do it yourself.
